Environment Jobs Scotland (EJS) is a new Forward Scotland initiative that will fulfill an important role in supporting implementation of the Scottish Executive’s Green Job strategy. Funded by the Scottish Executive and Jobcentre Plus, EJS will build on the previous work of Forward Scotland’s Jobs in the Environment Support Unit (JITESU), which identified potential to create up to 20,000 jobs in the Scottish environmental sector. The EJS initiative will build links with community organisations and business to demonstrate the potential of the environment sector to provide a career path that can lead to a long-term profession.

Over the coming months, the initiative will work towards a series of research and dissemination activities. These will be:
• Skills set mapping of the Waste Sector
• Skills set mapping of the Renewable Energy Sector
• Development of a training and skills development programme for public agencies, aimed at promotion of jobs in the environment sector
• An overview of the skills requirements of community groups to aid local sustainability
• Review of the ability of labour market statistics to accurately describe emerging jobs and skills in the environment sector

It is also envisaged that two seminars will be held to report on skills maps for the waste and renewable energy sectors. Full details of these events will be made available in the coming weeks through the Forward Scotland and Environment Jobs Scotland website.
