Sets New Target for 2015 Hydrogen Production Costs

Approximately
900 registrants, including about 200 project presenters and over 100 peer reviewers,
converged in Crystal City, Arlington, Virginia to hear, review and discuss the
projects that form the U.S. Department of Energy's broad coordinated hydrogen
program. For the first year, the program included substantive project results
beyond the DOE Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Infrastructure Technologies Program, including
Nuclear Energy, Fossil Energy and Basic Energy Research hydrogen-related work.
The most important news for the hydrogen community paying attention to U.S. Department
of Energy program goals is that the 2015 goal for hydrogen production, in 2005
U.S. dollars is now $2.00 to $3.00 per gallon of gasoline equivalent, nominally
a kilogram of hydrogen. The previous goal was $1.50/gge. The goal change recognizes
the expected increase in efficiency of 2015 vehicles, and the role of hybrids,
while also factoring in the increased efficiency of the fuel cell and electric
drive train propulsion systems expected to dominate transportation at that time.
The new goal is designed yield equivalent costs per mile with today's untaxed
gasoline cost of US$1.26/gal.
The fuel cell cost target remains at $30 per kilowatt (2005 $) and other storage
and vehicle range targets remain the same.
