Codes & Standards Update: Containers

by Karen Miller, Coordinator, National Hydrogen Association
As you may know, there are presently no standards available which specifically address containers used for hydrogen storage. Because of this, the National Hydrogen Association has formed a Codes & Standards Work Group to address this issue. On 30-31 May 1996, this Group met at the Hydrogen Safety, Codes & Standards Workshop in Washington, D.C., U.S.A.

At this time, the Work Group agreed that they would obtain a copy of the newly revised NGV2 Guideline and use it as a starting point for a draft HV Guideline for circulation, review, and comment. The group met again in October 1996 and proposed changes to make the guideline applicable to hydrogen.

This very rough draft is now ready to be reviewed by the industry which will be supporting it in the future, i.e, the container manufacturers. A draft copy of this proposed guideline has been sent to container manufacturers for review. We encourage their comments and participation at the next Work Group meeting.

The next scheduled meeting will take place 24-25 July 1997 in Washington, D.C., U.S.A. At this time, we expect to have sufficient input to put together a draft which could be reviewed by the entire membership perhaps sometime in September. If you are interested in participating in future work group meetings, or if you would like to provide commends on the draft guideline, please contact the NHA, or send an eMail to Karen Miller.
