NHA’s Insurance Survey and Its Purpose

Have you sent us your insurance survey? As more hydrogen systems are deployed, the need to mitigate the risks involved increases. Demonstrations that move hydrogen toward public acceptance require safety assurances. This often means insurance is required for hydrogen projects.

The purpose of the survey is to develop a baseline for insuring hydrogen projects. You, who are most involved with the implementation of hydrogen energy systems, must realize the importance of this information.

If you have not filled out the survey sent to you toward the end of last year, we urge you to do so. Responses will be used to identify the needs of the hydrogen community and to formulate an approach to begin a dialogue with the insurance industry for obtaining insurance for hydrogen projects.

While the hydrogen community addresses the issues surrounding risk with a guide to recommended practices, codes and standards activities, and improved sensors, this survey will tap your experience to identify the issues that must be addressed to obtain insurance. Safety assessments can then be made to determine appropriate methods to design demonstrations and mitigate risk. If the insurance industry is not aware of these issues, or does not understand them, then hydrogen projects cannot be insured at a reasonable cost.
