Hydrogen Clusters and Corridors
By Jay Keller, Sandia National Laboratories
The second working meeting of the Hydrogen Clusters
and Corridors (H2CC) was held 6 March 1998, following
the National Hydrogen Associations Annual Meeting. The meeting was
well attended by standing members of H2CC and by several
new faces making a total of 23 present. We welcome Bill Clapper from SunLine
Services Group, Richard Cromwell III from SunLine Transit Agency, Peter
Lehman from Schatz Energy Research Center, and Roxanne Dempsey from the
DOEs Office of Advanced Transportation Technologies Clean Cities Program.
Discussions during our business meeting yielded
several significant outcomes. Briefly, the results are:
- A standing executive committee was formed to assume the responsibility
and ensure the smooth continued operation of H2CC.
The current members of this committee are Bill Summers, Westinghouse Savannah
River Company, Susan Naughton, Bechtel Nevada, Peter Lehman, Schatz Energy
Research Corp, and Jay Keller, Sandia National Laboratories. The committee
will operate as a unit without specific job descriptions or titles given
to its members. Sandia National Laboratories, under the DOEs hydrogen
corridor program, will continue to sponsor the H2CC
meetings.
- A committee was formed to formalize procedures and qualifications for
membership into H2CC. This committee is chartered
with drafting guidelines for prospective H2CC members
and appropriate qualifying criterion. James Brandmueller at the Nevada
State Energy office is chairing the committee with membership from Dave
Bruderly (Bruderly Engineering Associates), Randy Brown (Southern California
Gas Company), Bill Clapper (SunLine Transit Agency), Roxanne Dempsey (DOEs
Office of Advanced Transportation Technologies Clean Cities Program), Jay
Keller (Sandia National Laboratories), George Kervitsky (Sentech), Susan
Naughton (Bechtel Nevada), Venki Raman (Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.),
Paul Shillcock (City of Palm Desert), and Bill Summers (Westinghouse Savannah
River Company).
- In light of Addison Bains research on the Hindenburg, the H2CC felt that the hydrogen community is in a strong defensible
position to correct the negative image of hydrogens role in this
accident. As such, the H2CC chartered the NHA to provide
leadership in correcting the textbooks on this event. The H2CC
has agreed to provide support as needed.
As a growing H2CC tradition
the meeting concluded with brief presentations from three of our charter
hydrogen cluster sights. Proposed activities at Las Vegas were presented
by Susan Naughton, the findings from the Florida group were presented by
David Bruderly, and Peter Lehman discussed the activities at Palm Desert.
Jay Keller presented a brief note outlining potential opportunities at Denali
National Park. The next meeting will be in conjunction with the Fall Hydrogen
Technical Advisory Panels (HTAP) meeting. The time and location are
currently undetermined.
