ISO Workgroup 7 Tackles Hydrogen Safety Issues at NHAs
Annual Meeting
A new workgroup on hydrogen safety has been
launched with its first meeting held on 6 March 1998. The convenor of the
meeting was Ulrich Schmidtchen, who also serves as the workgroups
Chairman. The delegates assigned to this workgroup include: José
Aprea (Argentina), Addison Bain (U.S.A.), Heidi Barnes (U.S.A.), Harold
Beeson (U.S.A.), Richard Chahine (Canada), Gustav Grob (Switzerland), David
Haberman (U.S.A.), Bob Hay (Canada), S. Ishida (Japan), Jai-Young Lee (Korea),
Karen Miller (U.S.A.), Ulrich Schmidtchen (Germany), Matthew Swain (U.S.A.),
Michael Swain (U.S.A.), Toshi Takematsu (Japan), Craig Webster (Canada),
Federico Zaccherini (Sweden). Norway, Switzerland, and Japan will officially
nominate safety experts in the following months.
The goal of WG7 is to create a standard, not
a technical report, for safe hydrogen use which will complement the U.S./Canadian
joint effort Sourcebook on Hydrogen Applications. The standard
will also be of international scope rather than focused on U.S. and Canadian
practices. The standard is intended to provide the technical means and regulations
related to hydrogen safety and support the work of other work groups in
the Technical Committee on Hydrogen (TC 197). The work group will attempt
to produce a standard that is in accordance with national regulations and
legislation of the ISO member countries, although the established national
standard shall take precedence if conflicts arise. Where national standards
do not already exist for hydrogen safety, the ISO may serve as an archetype
for future national legislation.
The work falls into the following subdivisions,
which also serve as the preliminary structure of the standard: scope, normative
references, definitions, safety relevant properties of hydrogen, materials,
basic risks, basic considerations for storage and transport vessels, fundamental
safety concepts for plant design, and fundamental safety concepts for plant
operation.
The next meeting of the work group will occur
on 25 June 1998, in conjunction with the 12th World Hydrogen Energy Conference.
